Chef Tayo’s Ebi-Ayo Supper Club offers something that goes beyond the typical tasting dinner. Blending his Nigerian heritage with a love for Italian cuisine, Tayo brings joy and family into focus with a truly shared communal dining experience, held at Ingredient Studios in Elysian Valley (aka Frogtown).

At the inaugural edition of the supper club this past weekend, guests were treated to a five-course menu that kicked off with grilled shrimp seasoned with Nigerian Suya served Bruschetta style, joined by a comforting spin on pepper soup. The star of the show might have been the West African Jollof rice, presented as a creamy Jollof Risotto and served with perfectly seasoned chicken. The meal wrapped with the Nigerian fried Puff-Puff remixed with sweet ricotta cheese, honey, and lemon zest. It was, in a word, delightful.

The ticketed meal, priced at $140 per person, includes flowing wine, with a portion of the proceeds supporting the Jikoni Recipe Archive—a non-profit dedicated to preserving and promoting Africa’s diverse culinary traditions.

I found that the warm and inviting atmosphere, paired with Chef Tayo’s delightful anecdotes about each dish, the family-style serving approach, and the diverse mix of guests, created a truly human experience. Whether attending as a pair or solo, everyone feels included, and the clinking of glasses reverberated throughout the evening.

The pop-up runs from January 14-28. You can get more info and book your reservation here.

Carla’s Fresh Market

Carla’s Fresh Market in Highland Park is a delightful space designed for exploration, appealing to both the traditional and modern aspects of the neighborhood. It serves as a reliable destination for purchasing farmers market goods from BIPOC growers and small businesses.

Founder Ariell Ilunga leverages her vendor relationships from her previous role at the Hollywood Farmers Market to curate an impressive selection of produce from California farmers, such as Garden Of, and meat sourced from Peads & Barnett. The snacks and prepared foods available here showcase some of the finest offerings from Los Angeles small businesses. This includes treats from Sad Girl Creamery, halva from Hebel & Co., and pizza from pi00a, a Deaf and CODA Asian family-owned to-go Neapolitan pizza operation.

There’s also a stellar line-up of wines curated by Black female sommelier LaShea Delaney, featuring wines from small, minority-owned winemakers. Additionally, Carla’s offers a coffee counter where you can also treat yourself to fresh pastries from Sasha Pilligian, or bread from Bub & Grandma’s, and Clark Street.

As for costs, the price points here are what you would expect at a typical farmers market. In practice, you’re looking at $3 for a bunch of carrots or stalks of celery, $10 for fresh loaves of bread, or in the teens for a pack of eggs. That said, Carla’s accepts EBT as a form of payment and on Sundays, they also host a “happy hour” providing discounted produce.

Carla’s Fresh Market is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This unique Thai dining experience revolves around a charcoal-heated grill with a raised dome, resembling a mix of Korean BBQ and Chinese hot pot. The meal includes an array of meats such as wagyu ribeye and kurobuta pork loin from Snake River Farm, accompanied by a medley of vegetables, rice, noodles, dipping sauces, and a rich broth. As the weather cools, indulge in sesame dumplings bathed in ginger syrup for dessert. Tickets cost $200 for a table of four with seating available for 5 p.m. or 8 p.m. Secure your reservations on OpenTable. More info here.
