This Couple is Creating a Competitive Inner Tube Race Down the L.A. River to “Welcome El Niño”

What’s one of the unintended consequences of being a big (expected) year for El Nino?

All the absurd ways folks come up with to take advantage of the weather!

Case in point:

Stand-up comedian (cause I think you’d have to be a comic to think of this) Kurt Braunohler along with his wife, storyteller/writer/actress Lauren Cook are creating something called the L.A.zy River, a competitive inner tube “race” down the L.A. River to welcome the coming onslaught of El Nino.

Included on the day of the event will be an official opening tube christening and ceremony, a respectful rain dance, and a pre-party at the river to send tubers off with music and libations. Locals can come to participate, spectate, cheer on their favorite tubers or simply enjoy the pre or post events / drinks.

The race is tentatively planned to be held on a weekend after the first major upcoming rainfall, but when exactly that will happen is (obviously) not up to human control.

For now, it’s kind of a wait, see and plan approach.

To get updates on when the event will take place, or to chip in and offer some help in planning/executing, you can head over to the event website.

They also have a list of what attendees should bring to the race, which includes your own tube (BYOT) along with a life vest, and a few other recommended essentials.
