Opening Reception: Anthony James’ “Absolute Zero” at there-there
October 6 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
On Friday, October 6, experience some amazing art — not to mention complimentary rosé by Lorenze and tunes from DJ Oski OG (son of “Godmother of Punk” Nina Hagen) — during the opening reception for Anthony James’ show, Absolute Zero, at there-there, a new gallery space in East Hollywood.
Perhaps most famous for setting fire to his Ferrari, then creating a sculpture from its remains, James’ work has also been shown at Art Basel and in New York, Milan, and Istanbul.
The British-born James is a sculptor whose spirituality figures prominently in his formalist work. The pair of icosahedron infinity box sculptures are astounding — peering into them is akin to staring at endless portals into the cosmos. The show also features neon sculptures, aura shields and more of what the artist refers to as “relics from the future.”
there-there is housed within the Merrick Building, an Art Deco structure whose other tenants include a trio of boutiques. The building will soon be home to the second location of Five Leaves, the Brooklyn brunch spot that was the brainchild of Heath Ledger. In a city where too many Art Deco gems were destroyed during the mid-20th century, when they were derided as “unfashionable,” it’s good to see the Merrick has been so beautifully restored.
