Enjoy a retrospective of 1980s skate-zine culture on Saturday, December 16 at Commonwealth LA in the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles.
The exhibition, No Shitty Ads, created in collaboration with the Skateboardmuseum Berlin and FACT., focuses on a time in the early ‘80s when many glossy skateboarding magazines went under, motivating fans with a DIY spirit to take fate into their hands and create their own zines.
The rawness of the designs, inspired by punk rock culture, helped make these publications unique artifacts of the time. Skate Fate was followed by hundreds of other zines, many with print runs of just 25 to 50.
This exhibition will display a selection of original zines from all over world, including Skate Fate, Swank Zine, Death Zone, Skate Punk, Speed Zine, and more. In addition, there will be DIY, Punk and New Wave-inspired apparel on hand, along with the option to purchase selected zine reprints.
Commonwealth LA is the newly opened flagship store for the men’s lifestyle boutique also located in Virginia Beach, DC and Manila. The exhibit opens to the general public on December 17.
