Watts Towers Festivals: Two Great (and FREE!) Music & Culture Festivals
September 30 - October 1Free
Watts Towers will soon be the site of two exciting music and culture festivals: the 36th Annual Watts Towers Day of the Drum Festival on Saturday, September 30, and the 41st Annual Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival on Sunday, October 1.
Saturday’s Day of the Drum Festival begins with a ceremony uniting all cultures: a Yoruba ground blessing ceremony. The fest will also feature Polynesian music and Tahitian Dance, the Bate Batuque-Bloco Obini “All Queen Ensemble,” The Drum Apostles, Kouman Kele West African Dance & Drum Company, and Rhythm Roulette, a soulful infusion of musical elements.
Sunday’s Watts Tower Jazz Festival kicks off with the Yoruba ground blessing. Then listen to music meant to move the soul: Dee Dee McNeil Jazz Band (former Lady of the Watts Prophets), Roy Gaines & his Orchestra Tuxedo Blues, Danny Cortez & Tony Harris Big Band, the Bernie Maupin Ensemble, JMP All Stars (featuring Patrice Rushen and more). There will also be a Tai Chi Chuan demo from an expert.
In addition, each day will feature all-day activities, including tours of the famed Watts Towers, supervised children’s activities, art gallery tours, and vendors selling food and arts and crafts.
Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Enjoy!
