Living in Old Town Pasadena for two years certainly has had its advantages , not the least of which has been my stone’s throw proximity to El Taquito Mexicano Taco Truck. Let me explain. Back when I was attending UCSB the drunk food de jour was a burrito. Breakfast style with eggs, carne asada, pollo… take your pick. Of course, a man (or woman) can’t keep up that pace forever. As you get older your metabolism wears on you and you can no longer shed the pounds as easily as you once may have. I think this is part of the reason hipsters flock to the food truck taco. Portion control. And so my own personal taco love affair begins…
So why El Taquito?
Tasty and authentic food. Quick and friendly service. Open till 3:00am on Friday / Saturday nights. It’s also just far enough away from the main drag of bars on Old Town that it’s not over-run by tourists, random stragglers, or homeless folks. Not that I have anything against the homeless, I’d just prefer not to be hassled for change while waiting in line to get my grub on. Basically, it’s the perfect spot in Pasadena to get a late-night taco fix, and the tacos are freakin’ delicious. Highly recommended.
There is another taco truck that operates a half block north near the intersection of Del Mar and Fair Oaks. Don’t be fooled by imitators. Its cash only, so bring the green if you want tacos. Speaking of green, if you’re extremely sensitive to spice, make sure to opt for the green (verde) sauce and not the red (rojo). The lines can get fairly long during peak hours (Thurday, Friday, Saturday evenings) so if you come at that time, be prepared for a short wait. Street parking is usually amply available along Fair Oaks.
