28 Totally Fun Things To Do in L.A. This Week [3-9-15 to 3-13-15]

Every week in Los Angeles there’s tons of great things to do (even before the weekend gets started) that we think you ought to have on your radar. With that in mind, we put together a list every Monday morning to keep you in the know about what’s happening in the city you love.

This week includes a documentary about a disastrous film remake, a free Mayer Hawthorne set at Amoeba Music, Cinderella at El Capitan, a Big Lebowski Fest, The Downtown Art Walk, and plenty, plenty more!

Monday March 9th, 2015

1. Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau

If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the scenes when a big-budget Hollywood production goes off the rails, Lost Souls is the perfect lens through which to see it unfold. The film documents the disastrous 1996 remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau, blending elements of both the tragic and the absurd as we witness poor decision making, bad weather, hubris and ego come together to create one of the most disappointing films of all time. Showing this week at Cinefamily. 2. FUDS A Food Parody 

New York comedians Dan Klein, Kelly Hudson and Arthur Meyer created a fake menu for a fake restaurant called FUDS which went viral on the internet in 2012. The stint pokes fun at the pretentious food culture in which Los Angeles is definitely apart of. FUDS offered “a journey in food taste from mouth to toilet.”Since it’s internet success the creators of FUDS is publishing a book FUDS: A Compete Encyclofoodia From Tickling Shrimp to Not Dying in a Restaurant , a cookbook and lifestyle book with a real forward from celebrity chef Mario Batali. 3. Late Night Comedy 

Host JC Coccoli books the latest comedians local, around the country and over seas to join her every monday night at Public House 1739 for her show Fringe. The show is free and the sports bar even foots the bill for pizza and beer. Check out the Fringe Facebook events page for the latest updates.

4. Hot Tub With Kurt An Kristen

After their show became a hit in Brooklyn, New York comedians Kurt Braunohler and Kristen Schaal took their show to the west coast. Hot Tub With Kurt And Kristen is a weekly variety show happening at The Virgil. You might recognize Kurt from Chelsea Lately and Kristen from The Daily Show and Flight of the Concords. Laugh your ass off for just $5 bucks or $8 at the door. Get your advance tickets here.

5. Odd Market Eagle Rock 

Eagle Rock has a super cool Odd Market happening every Monday from 5:30 to 9:30pm you can expect food trucks, pop up vendors, bowling and cocktails. Located at All Star Lanes and sponsored by LA Weekly we get the feeling this event will become a popular hang out in the community fast. The organizers of this event have previously created the Downtown Flea Market, Dodger Stadium Flea Market, Peddler on the Roof and Truckit Fest, so if you’ve been to any of those, that may give you an idea of what you’re in for here.

6. Project Ethos LA Fashion Week powered by French Tuesdays

It’s L.A. Fashion Week! Project Ethos will be hosting a night of fashion, music and art at Hollywood’s The Taglyan. The night will have eight runways shows, DJ sets, live artist and performances. Tickets are available to the public on eventbrite.

7. LACMA Free Day 

On the second Tuesday of every month LACMA invites the public to visit the museum for free. Check out the public art displays too like Chris Burden’s permeant installation Urban Lights and more.

8. Wong-Kar wai Double Feature

The New Beverly Cinema will be showing a double feature of internationally renowned Director Wong-Kar wai’s Chungking Express and Days of Being Wild. Wong-Kar wai is known for his unique, highly stylized emotional work. He is one of the best directors of this time and has won accolades around the world. Tickets are $6 and can be found on The New Beverly Cinema site.

9. Style Stories with Kimberly Truhler : Gloria Swanson

The Annenberg Community Beach House and film historian Kimberly Truhler delivers a glimpse into the history of fashion in film. This week she takes a close look into Sunset Boulevard star Gloria Swanson’s fashion. The community beach house hosts Beach=Culture, a year round series of free art and culture events. 10. The Night Alive At The Geffen Playhouse 

Winner of the 2014 New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Conor McPherson’s The Night Alive is now in Los Angeles! The play follows Tommy who finds that no good deed goes unpunished with a series of incidents unraveling before the audience’s eyes. McPherson is a Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee who is recognized for his poetic dialogue and rich storytelling. Get more information and discounted tickets via Goldstar.

11. All-Star Chef Classic

All-Star Chef Classic returns to Los Angeles for a four day food coma-tastic event. 12. The Working Women’s Club: Work Party

From 11am-5pm at The Ace Hotel Upstairs The Working Women’s Club will be hosting a all day gathering where ladies can come with their laptops, notebooks, sketch pads etc. and enjoy some good vibes, network, collaborate and check in with one another.

13. Free DJ Set By Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One Of Tuxedo At Amoeba Music

Two Grammy nominated artist join forces to become one awesome dynamic duo by the name Tuxedo! Come by and shake your thing to a double DJ set it’s all free and if you like what you hear pick up their album too! The sets start at 6pm at Amoeba Music.

14. Become A Cheese Connoisseur At Cheese 101

Andrew’s Cheese shop in Santa Monica will hold a class about the history, origin and basics of cheese. Of course there will be plenty of cheese to sample. How else would you be able to learn? The class is $30 and can be found on eventbrite here.

15. Dame Edna Bids Farewell

We mentioned it last week, but it’s worth mentioning again. Topping off her 50 years in show business Dame Edna is ready to dazzle audiences one last time in this side splitting finale. 16. LOL At Everything Is Terrible: Legends

The Everything Is Terrible website is dedicated to finding, preserving and show casing the best of the worst of what 20th century film and television has to offer… on VHS. For those who do not know what a VHS is it’s videotape (the thing before dvd’s.)The guys at EIT took thousands of forgotten tape and somehow managed to make a movie night out of it! Be prepared, stuff is about to get awfully weird in a good way? We hope?

17. MOCA Pacific Design Center Presents Bernhard Willhelm

This is the first American exhibition of German designer Bernhard Willhelm and Jutta Kraus. Created just for MOCA this site specific work consist of installations and sculptures that feature Willhelm’s Fall 2015/16 collection. The exhibition runs through May 7th and is free.

18. Downtown LA Art Walk

The Art Walk has been a L.A. cultural phenomenon bringing in art enthusiasts and locals together every second Thursday of each month. Art galleries, shops, bars and more open up for one big party celebrating art and DTLA for one fine night.

19. HUMP! Tour 2015

Dan Savage is an American gay activist, author and media personalty who writes popular syndicated relationship and sex advice column Savage Love. After curating the HUMP! Film Festival in Seattle and Portland he is taking the show to Los Angeles. 18 films will be screened from animation to spoken word these films will have you laughing, wincing, closing your eyes at the sexual rainbow humanity has to offer. 20. Showgirl Revue at the Historic El Cid

21. The Toledo Show

Jazz, cabaret and one hell of a story unfolds here at The Toledo Show where the audience will get a glimpse of the seedy side of the city of angels and its fallen souls. The tickets are going fast so get ’em quick!

22. STARS & STRIKES Celebrity Bowling & Poker Tournament 2015 for APCH

A Place Called Home’s 9th Annual Stars & Strikes Celebrity Bowling & Poker Tournament will take place at PINZ in Studio City. Enjoy a night of bowling, food, beverages and poker all for a good cause. Proceeds go to support inner city youth through programs in education, the arts, health and college preparation. You have to buy tickets to join in on the fun, find out more on APCH’s event page.

23. The Farriers Package at Santa Anita

24. Cinderella At The El Capitan

To celebrate Disney’s new Cinderella movie The El Capitan will host a live action event with special guests, film props, a light show and more as you wait for the curtain to go up. For fans of Frozen, Disney will also be showing a short Frozen Fever for attendees. This is an event for fairy tale lovers and romantics alike. 25. Meet The Glee Cast At PaleyFest 2015

The star studded cast is graduating so bid farewell to Lea Michelle, Chord Overstreet, Amber Riley and more. The Emmy and Golden Globe award winning show creator and cast will be at PaleyFest at the Hollwood Dolby Theatre. Score half price tickets while they last via Goldstar.

26. Lebowski Fest LA

It’s just, like, our opinion man but we think The Lebowski Fest LA sounds like a party worth attending. Things kick off Friday March 13th with a movie Party featuring Kyle Gass Band and a screening of the original 35mm print of The Big Lebowski at Saban Theatre. The festivities continue Saturday with a bowling /costume party, trivia and other contests at Fountain Bowl. Mark it zero, dude!

27. The Friday Forty At NerdMelt

Dave Holmes and Scott Gimple is hosting their on going drinking game meets current affairs news- sketch comedy show at The NerdMelt Showroom. Performers gain some “liquid courage” before answering 40 questions about events from the last seven days. The show starts at 9 p.m. $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

28. Laugh Your Ass Off At The Comedy Mash Up: Pulp Fiction Meets Shakespeare 

Set in Elizabethan England, this story follows a pair of hit men that go on an adventure…very much like a certain movie that made Quentin Tarantino pretty damn famous.
