Tom Explores The Piggyback Yard, Lynchpin to a $1 Billion L.A. River Redevelopment Plan

January 25, 2015 by Brian Champlin

In the latest episode of his YouTube series ‘Tom Explores Los Angeles‘ host Tom Carroll dives into the history of the Piggyback Yard (formally as Los Angeles Trailer and Container Intermodal Facility), highlighting a discussion of the how this 113 acre plot of land just north of downtown L.A. is the lynchpin of a potential $1 billion L.A. River restoration project previously recommended by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Of note, since the initial report was released by the Army Corps  it has become evident that the current owner of the land, Union Pacific, is what a report from KCET termed a ‘reluctant seller.’

So yeah, they want more money for their land than would’ve been budgeted in the $1 billion proposal (the most expensive plan on the table, btw), so now the whole thing could be in jeopardy.

Very cool of Tom to spotlight this issue.

I’m very interested to see how the redevelopment of the river plays out, but only time will tell.

As always, if you like Tom’s work give his YouTube channel a look.
