Three Top Picks To Do This Sunday
M = Less than .5 miles from an L.A. Metro Station, FA = Free Admission
Under the Sun: Solstice Soundscape with Film, Poetry, & Music – FA > Herald the summer solstice with an evening of reflection, poetry, and sound as The Fowler Museum at UCLA hosts Under the Sun. The program opens with a screening of Yáamay: An Ode to Blooming, a lyrical short film centering the lived experiences, memory, and enduring legacies of contemporary California Indigenous women. Following the film, co-directors Camaray Davalos and Casse Kíihut join poet and producer Avelaka Macarro for an onstage conversation. The celebration then moves into the outdoor Fowler Amphitheater for live musical performances by Genevra Munroa, Alexis Munroa, and Andrew Dyer, capping off with sunset poetry readings by Jessa Calderon and Solange Aguilar. Light refreshments will be served. Free to attend. Runs 5:30 to 9 p.m. More info here.
GUC Wellness Workshop – FA > This Sunday, Alma Backyard Farms hosts a donation-based wellness workshop led by former NBA player and Compton native “Yoga Bob” Jones to celebrate Father’s Day weekend. The family-friendly session features all-levels breathwork, guided meditation, and yoga designed for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike, with participants entered to win a Lululemon yoga mat and a signed children’s book. The monthly event supports the Growing Up Compton initiative’s mission to open the city’s first dedicated yoga studio. Attendees can also explore the urban farm’s weekly stand, which features fresh, locally grown produce and community vendors. Admission is by donation, and yoga mats are provided on-site. Starts at 9:30 a.m. More info here.
Getty Summer Solstice Celebration – FA > The Getty hosts its first Summer Solstice Celebration this Sunday to mark the longest day of the year with live music, esoteric arts, and hands-on workshops. The afternoon features terrace jazz from The Don Brown Collective, individual tarot readings with Vivi Henriette, and unique drop-in craft activations including cyanotype sun printing with Meztli Projects, seed ball tossing with David Horvitz, and potato-carved tote bag stamping with GYOPO. A central highlight is the rare Solar Noon Celebration, which grants limited, first-come access to the Getty Library’s third floor to witness the sun’s light align precisely through the building’s architectural oculus, accompanied by a choral performance from Becky Stark and the Sound as Light Choir. Programming runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free to attend, but advance reservations are required. More info here.
