Few places in Los Angeles inspire like The Last Bookstore in Downtown. California’s largest indie new/used book mecca is kind of like L.A.’s answer to Portland’s Powell’s Books. But maybe that sells it short. The sprawling 22,000 square foot, two-story space boasts a seemingly endless array of new and used books–something approaching a quarter million volumes in total. You’ll also find sections for vinyl records, DVDs and antique books, plus multiple art studios and a tiny art gallery on the mezzanine level.

The size is one thing, but the character is in the angled rows of shelves and the floor-to-ceiling fluted columns. It’s in the oddball book sculptures and tiny details and vintage pieces that jump out at you from every nook and cranny. You’re as likely to find someone sunk into a leather chair reading a classic novel as you are spy a couple posing for photos under the upstairs book tunnel arch. In any case, it’s worth a visit. Stop by to see for yourself next time you’re in DTLA. BONUS: If you can’t get to downtown, The Last Bookstore recently opened a satellite location (smaller, but chill) in Studio City.
