Cool Spots in L.A.: Hilltop Park in Signal Hill

Posted by

A lot of angelenos are versed in some of the best views in the city, from the perch at the Griffith Observatory to sunset views of the Santa Monica pier. But those unfamiliar with anything south of LAX may not have heard of a little gem just down the freeway that provides easy access and a sweet view to boot. Of course I’m talking about Hilltop Park.

Located in Signal Hill just north of downtown Long Beach, the park is easily accessible by exiting Cherry Ave. off the 405 and heading south about 1 mile or so.

It’s not exceptionally big, just a big round space at the top of the hill with a concrete rim and benches for seating, plus what I can only define as a giant torch thingy that sits in apex of the park.

So Why Hilltop Park?

Good panoramic view of Long Beach, Ranchos Palos Verdes, and a long-shot view of DTLA.

Lots of benches for snuggle time with your sweetie.

100% free.

Great pre-dinner spot for a cheap date to watch as the lights turn on in the Southland as the dusk turns into night (see pic above).

Absolutely a must visit if you’re a Long Beach resident.

Quick Notes

There is free parking in residential areas surrounding the park but it can get pretty packed around sunset / dusk timeline.

The hilltop gets a bit breezy in the evening, so if you’re planning on hanging out, probably best to dress appropriately (and or bring a blanket).
