Gonna be a hot one this weekend. With temps pushing up into the 90’s, you’ll want make sure you lather on the sunscreen and keep the water handy wherever you go.

Summer of Salsa – > LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes’ Summer of Salsa returns for the first installment of 2025 this Friday, offering monthly dance parties one Friday per month through September. Jack Kirby Exhibition at The Skirball TP > The Skirball Cultural Center just opened their new spring exhibitions, and we rate one of them as an absolute must-see. Jack Kirby: Heroes and Humanity documents the extraordinary six-decade career of a comic creator whose credits include Captain America, Ant-Man, the Black Panther, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and many more. Here you’ll find an expansive collection of comics, illustrations, concept art, posters, costumes, personal photographs, and video clips all woven together to demonstrate Kirby’s lasting impact on pop culture. The Skirball is open Tuesday to Sunday. Admission starts at $18 for adults, but it’s also free for all every Thursday. More info here.

Ivy Station Night Market: Mother’s Day EditionM FA > Ivy Station’s monthly night market returns this Friday with a special edition dedicated to Mother’s Day. Expect 30+ local makers and artisan vendors, food trucks, adoptable dogs from A Purposeful Rescue, kids crafting with Fit4Mom Los Angeles. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Free to attend. Jazz at LACMAFA > The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s annual Friday Night Jazz series is back starting in May, offering free weekly concerts at Smidt Welcome Plaza. The fun continues this Friday with a performance by the Tatiana Tate Band. PLUS: Remember that LACMA is free to visit for L.A. L.A. County Fair -> Continuing this Thursday to Sunday, the L.A. County Fair returns to Pomona for its annual assortment of activities, musical performances, food and beverage offerings, rides, and more. After the Friday opener, the fair continues Thursday to Sunday through the rest of the month plus Monday, May 26. Single day, advance tickets start at $18.50-$27.50 for adults. More info here.

O-Launch Weekend FA > Otis College of Design hosts a day of in-person events and exhibitions this Saturday featuring the talents of graduating students. There will be a campus-wide exhibition and a Junior and Senior class Fashion Show, all presented alongside food trucks live DJs. The event runs from 5 to 11 p.m. and is free and open to the public. In The Mix at LACMAFA > This Saturday, Crenshaw Dairy Mart teams up with LACMA for the second in a pair of sonically-inspired film screenings taking place at Smidt Welcome Plaza. This weekend, catch a screening of Kumbia Net: Un Estilo Bien Diferente bookended by live DJ sets and accompanied by a post-screening discussion with Director Alvaro Parra. Free to attend. Jeffrey Gibson: the space in which to place meM TP > This Saturday, The Broad opens a new specially ticketed exhibition featuring the work of Jeffrey Gibson, a queer artist of Choctaw-Cherokee heritage who was the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States as a solo artist at the U.S. Pavilion for the 60th Venice Biennale. Jeffrey Gibson: the space in which to place me offers a critique of systemic injustice and racial erasure through the contrast of vibrantly colored geometric designs to cultural references/quotes/artifacts. Points of references run the gamut from song lyrics and old letters to quotes from political documents. Gibson uses a range of mediums, and the exhibition includes ten paintings, seven sculptures, eight flags, three murals, and one video installation. Tickets for entry to the special exhibition start at $15 for adults. It will run through September 28, 2025. More info here.

DTLA Flea at Grand Central MarketM FA > Earlier this year, Patches and Pin Expo announced a partnership with Grand Central Market for a new monthly flea to take place every second Saturday inside the Market’s lower level. They call it the DTLA Flea Market, and for the May 10 edition of the event, they’re theming it out as a “Labubu Market” (those Gremlin-esque charms you’re seeing attached to everyone’s purses). The market runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Just Like Heaven -> Just Like Heaven returns to Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena this Saturday with a lineup that includes Vampire Weekend, TV On The Radio, Toro Y Moi, Wild Nothing and other acts. Tickets start at $226. More info here.

Wellness & WavesFA > Welcome your Mother’s Day weekend with a beachside workout at Santa Monica Pier’s Wellness & Waves activation this Saturday. There will be a group run starting at 8 p.m., or you can join a mat pilates class (RSVP required) with Jackie Hinton from 9 to 10 a.m. Both activations are free to participate in. More info here.

Self Care Yoga at CAAMM FA > Bring your exercise mat and head over to the California African American this Saturday morning for a fresh edition of Self Care Yoga. Strong Tides, Stronger Community RideFA > On Saturday, Metro Bike Share will host a beginner-friendly community ride that begins in Mar Vista then rolls on to the iconic Venice Canals before returning to the starting point for an 8.6-mile round trip. As with all Metro Bike Share events, riders 16 years and older can reserve a Metro Bike (in advance) at no cost. Ride starts at 10 a.m. More info here.

4th Valley Asian Cultural FestivalFA > To celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the West Valley – Warner Center Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Asian Valley Cultural Festival at Pierce College in Woodland Hills on Saturday. Aristotle/AlexanderTP > After a successful run at The Getty Villa’s Theater Lab last spring, director Alex Lyras has brought Aristotle/Alexander to Company of Angels in Boyle Heights this spring. The play dramatizes the real-life relationship between between Aristotle and a teenaged Alexander the Great, touching on themes of power, tyranny, truth and democracy, and resonating (all too vividly) with issues of today. This Saturday’s back-to-back performance (3 and 8 p.m.) will be the final shows in the current run. Tickets start at $40 for adults. More info here.

Free Admission at UPAM for AAPI Month M FA > The USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena is offering free admission every Saturday and Sunday in May to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Take advantage of the special offer to check out the marvelous exhibition, Cai Guo-Qiang: A Material Odyssey, which explores the artist’s unique process of using gunpowder and pyrotechnics to create drawings, paintings, and events.
