Synth Club at Common Space – FA > Every first Monday of the month, the LA Synth Club hosts a monthly meet-up and jam session at Common Space Brewery in Hawthorne. Musicians are invited to bring their favorite synthesizers, drum machines, or any other electronic instruments to experiment / jam with. Runs 6 to 10 p.m. More info here.
Oxy Live! presents a Conversation with Ed Ruscha – FA > Oxy Live is a series of conversations with a diverse lineup of cultural luminaries at the forefront of their fields for thought-provoking discussions at Occidental College’s Thorne Hall. This Tuesday, the series hosts an evening of conversation between renowned visual artist Ed Ruscha and cultural interlocutor Paul Holdengräber. Free to attend, but an RSVP is required. PERSEVERANCE: 20 Years of Thinkspace – FA > A new exhibition at Glendale’s Brand Library & Art Center looks back the last two decades at Thinkspace Projects with a 20th anniversary show featuring over 70 artists, combining new works with site-specific murals. Free to attend. Open Tuesday to Saturday during regular gallery hours. The exhibition remains on view through March 29, 2025. More info here.
Transit Equality Day – FA > Both L.A. Metro and Metrolink are offering free rides this Tuesday for Transit Equity Day, which is held annually on the birthday of civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks. More info here.
G*VE A F*CK BENEFIT FOR LA WILDFIRE RELIEF -> This week’s biggest Wildfire Fundraiser comes to the Hollywood Palladium on Wednesday as John C. Reily hosts a lineup that includes Christopher Owens, MUNA, Fred Armisen, Jenny Lewis, Courtney Barnett, Phantom Planet, Reggie Watts, St. Vincent, and many more. There will also be a celebrity memorabilia auction that features items from Beasteie Boys, Cher, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, The Strokes, and others. 100% of the net proceeds for the evening go to Altadena Girls, Pasadena Humane Society, One Voice, and Friends In Deed. Data and Donuts – FA > Data + Donuts is a morning speaker series and networking meet-up that features “makers and doers that are changing local government from the ground up by harnessing technology and data to drive meaningful change.” This Wednesday, the next installment of the series features Ryan Synder, a Cal Trans Feasibility Studies Manager, who will lead a presentation/discussion on on the PCH Master Plan in Malibu. The event takes place at LA Cleantech Incubator at the La Kretz Innovation Campus in the Arts District beginning at 8 a.m. Free to attend with advance registration. More info here.
Fire Kinship at the Fowler Museum – FA > The Fowler’s second PST Art exhibition, Fire Kinship, could not arrive at a more timely and dramatic moment in Los Angeles history. The exhibition posits a counter-narrative around the use of fire that seeks a return to Native practices in which fire is regarded as a vital aspect of land stewardship, community well-being, and tribal sovereignty. Fire Kinship includes installations, objects, videos, documents and multimedia works that explore Native communities’ ongoing partnership with the land, and inspire visitors to rethink attitudes of fear and illegality around fire. The exhibition remains on view through July 13, 2025. The Fowler Museum is free to visit Wednesday to Sunday. Get more info here.
How Can Our World Rethink Climate Mobility? – FA M TP > Nobody in the city engages ideas in live settings better than Zócalo Public Square, and this Thursday their bringing their series to the new NHM Commons Theater for a panel conversation oriented around climate change, human movement, and international resiliency and cooperation. ICONIC LA MOVIES: Community Cinema Night at The Hollywood Roosevelt – M > This Thursday, the Hollywood Roosevelt invites guests to a weekly movie night under the stars at the iconic Tropicana Pool, featuring special screenings of classic Hollywood films every Thursday. Best of all, every dollar spent goes toward Baby2Baby to support wildfire relief efforts. Screenings cost $12 a person. More info here.
The Autry After Hours -> The Autry continues its ongoing series after-hours cultural events this Thursday with a Sound Bath Experience. Guests will relax and prepare for the New Year with an opportunity to experience a live sound bath, combining crystal singing bowls with modular synthesizers, then explore the museum with a refreshed perspective. MOCA First Friday – FA M TP > February’s edition of First Fridays at MOCA Geffen features free admission to the museum plus a live drawing session by Tim Biskup, Los Angeles-based artist who specializes in on-demand graphite drawings (like these). Free admission is available via timed RSVP slots from 5 to 8 p.m. More info here.
First Fridays in Chinatown – FA M > L.A.’s Chinatown stays open late on Friday for an evening of exploring the unique small businesses and contemporary art and culture spaces that make up the historic neighborhood. West Plaza and Chungking Road will activate with local pop-up vendors, DJ-spun music, and area galleries with extended hours from 6 to 10 p.m. The Damnoen Saduak Night Market will also be going strong at Far East Plaza from 5 to 11 p.m. Free to attend, as always. The Infatuation’s Sunday Dinner Series -> The Infatuation’s Sunday Dinner Series launches a month-long celebration of Black culinary excellence, partnering with L.A.’s top Black-owned restaurants to serve dishes inspired by their Sunday dinner traditions. Alta Adams plates up Jollof Risotto with Peri Peri Prawns, Bridgetown Roti crafts a Caribbean Fish Dinner, Two Hommés recreates granny’s barbeque chicken and Dulan’s serves Shrimp and Grits as well as Jambalaya. As part of the series, The Infatuation will donate $50,000 to World Central Kitchen to support their efforts feeding first responders and families affected by L.A. wildfires. More info here.
Found Oyster and Rustic Canyon Fire Relief Pop-Up -> This month, Found Oyster and Rustic Canyon join forces for a duo of fire relief pop-up events. First up, Found Oyster pops up at Rustic Canyon in Santa Monica on Thursday, February 6, followed by Rustic Canyon taking over Found Oyster in East Hollywood on Wednesday, February 19. All proceeds support the California Community Foundation’s wildfire recovery efforts. More info here.
Last Week of Dine LA -> It’s the final week of Dine LA, and there’s still time to support L.A. Tourism’s mission to raise funds for The American Red Cross. For every reservation made at a participating restaurant, L.A. Tourism donates $5, with Banc of California matching donations up to $100,000. With around 100 restaurants on board, consider dining in neighborhoods impacted by the wildfires—like Pasadena and Santa Monica—every bit helps. More info here.
A Super Bowl Buffet at Pijja Palace -> Pijja Palace, Silver Lake’s beloved Indian American sports bar, is throwing down an all-you-can-eat Super Bowl buffet this Sunday. For $80, guests can dig into a spread of pizza, pasta, salad, wings, and surprise dishes, with doors opening at 2:30 p.m. and the buffet kicking off at 3 p.m. A ticket guarantees a seat for the entire game (drinks sold separately.
