This past weekend has us in a resistance mindset, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help you find some of the great cultural happenings taking place around Los Angeles this week. That is, after all, what we do.

On tap this June 16-20, you’ll find The Hammer’s annual Bloomsday celebration, JEB’s The Dyke Show screening at The Getty, a Cowboy Poetry Workshop at Eastwood, Juneteenth Celebrations across Los Angeles, KCRW Summer Nights at CAAM, Moonlight Movies on the Beach, and more.

Bloomsday 2025FA > On Monday, The Hammer celebrates author James Joyce and his novel Ulysses with Bloomsday, a theatrical blend of staged readings and performances all centered around the author’s most iconic work. Program starts at 7:30 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Hollywood Fringe Festival -> The Hollywood Fringe Festival continues all week long with its annual run of comedy shows, ensemble plays, dance performances, and immersive experiences taking over venues like Zephyr Theatre, The Broadwater, and Three Clubs. The festival runs through June 29. More info here.

Moonlight Movies on the BeachFA TP > Long Beach’s signature beachside summer cinema series returns for 2025 starting this Tuesday with a screening of The Goonies at Granada Beach. Movie starts around sunset (8 to 8:30 p.m.). Free to attend, and parking is free after 6 p.m., though spots are limited. More info here.

Queer Lens: ‘The Dyke Show by JEB‘ – FA > Pride month is a great time to get familiar (if you’re not already) with Joan E. Biren (known as JEB), a feminist filmmaker and photographer whose groundbreaking work The Dyke Show was performed more than 80 times to packed audiences at community spaces and universities across North America in the early 1980s. This Tuesday, the Getty’s Harold M. Williams Auditorium will screen a pre-recorded version of the show (filmed in 2023) followed by a talkback with JEB and photographer Amina Cruz. The show starts at 7 p.m., and is free to attend with advanced reservation. More info here.

Wrong Answers Only M > Wrongs Answers Only is a live quiz show where comedians get schooled by scientists so audiences can laugh and learn together. This Tuesday at Dynasty Typewriter, the event tackles the tasty topic of ice cream. Host Chris Duffy, ice cream expert Dr. Maya Warren, and a special panel of comedians collaborate to figure out what it takes to make the perfect pint Tickets are $15. An Evening of Folk at The Hollywood Bowl -> This Wednesday, the Hollywood Bowl hosts a journey through the evolution of folk with some of the genres biggest stars in a one-night-only celebration of American music led by singer, fiddler, banjo player, and composer Rhiannon Giddens. Giddens, a two time Grammy-winner and MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient, leads her own Old-Time Revue (Dirk Powell, Jason Sypher, Demeanor, Amelia Powell, and Justin Robinson of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) alongside Our Native Daughters (Leyla McCalla, Amythyst Kiah), Steve Martin, Alison Brown, Ed Helms, and more. Cowboy Poetry Workshop FA > Want to learn how to rhyme like a cowboy? Head to the Eastwood this Wednesday for a special event hosted by Cowboy Poetry LA. The event will feature a selection of vintage 1940s-50s typewriters where guests can punch out a few verses after a tutorial workshop kicks off the evening. The programming rounds out with special live readings and Americana music performances. Runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Juneteenth Celebrations in Los Angeles -> This Thursday, the nation commemorates the ending of slavery with the Juneteenth holiday. Some of the events and celebrations around town include an evening of Bold Black Storytelling at Barnsdall Gallery Theater (free), a Day of Wellness celebrating Juneteenth at Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey (free), a Juneteenth Ceremony at Bruce’s Beach in Manhattan Beach (free), and ), a Juneteenth event at CAAM which will spotlight the exhibition explore Repossessions (free), and a Juneteenth Celebration at the Santa Monica Pier co-produced by Ebony Beach Club and Black Lives Matter (tix are $25). Expect more celebrations this weekend, which we will cover in our Thursday guide.

KCRW Summer Nights at CAAMM FA TP > KCRW Summer Nights comes to the California African American Museum this Friday with an all-ages dance party with live sets from Guest DJ Damar Davis and KCRW DJ Novena Carmel. The event will feature food trucks, a beer garden, and crafts, plus attendees get after-hours access to all CAAM’s exhibitions, including solo exhibitions by Awol Erizku, Darol Olu Kae, Nellie Mae Rowe, and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. Event starts at 7 p.m. Free to attend. More info here.

Shakespeare By the SeaFA > Now in its 28th anniversary season, Shakespeare By the Sea continues this Friday and Saturday with performance of Julius Caesar at The Bandshell at Recreation Park in Long Beach All shows are free to attend, but donations are gladly accepted. Performances run at locations throughout L.A. and Orange County through July 26. More info here.

Summer Salsa Nights at Ivy StationM FA > This Friday, hop over to Ivy Station in Culver City for an evening of salsa. Dance instructor Pepe Gonzalez teaches an intro salsa lesson from 6:30 to 7 p.m., then guests can use what they’ve learned during a live set by Fermin Fusion Salsa from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Free. Outdoors. Pies for Justice Returns (June 19–22) -> Gather for Good’s signature citywide fundraiser Pies for Justice returns June 19–22, rallying LA and OC’s best chefs, bakers, and restaurants to bake for a cause. Expect sweet pies, savory pies, pizza pies, and hand pies—all crafted to raise funds for two vital organizations: Peace 4 Kids, which supports youth in foster care in South LA, and ACLU SoCal, which defends civil rights for all. Each participant offers something different—some will sell slices or whole pies, others will host raffles. However you slice it, it’s a delicious way to support equity and justice. More info here

Camélia Launches Lunch & Happy Hour Service -> Arts District bistro Camélia pivots to daytime dining with a new lunch and happy hour menu served daily from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dig into standout plates like the Croque Madame with ham katsu, gruyere, and cured yolk; a Dry-Aged Burger and fries; Japanese-style Bolognese; and vibrant seasonal salads. Saint & Second Debuts New Social Hour & Dessert Menu -> Starting this Thursday, Saint & Second rolls out a fresh Social Hour and seasonal dessert lineup to kick off summer in delicious style. Snack on bites like Crispy Chicken Sliders on Parker House Rolls, Brown Butter Chickpea Hummus with flatbread, and Blackened Salmon Tacos. Save room for sweet new additions like Strawberry Shortcake, Peach Cobbler Hand Pie, Coconut Panna Cotta, and an interactive S’mores Bar with marshmallows toasted tableside. Social Hour runs weekdays from 3–6 p.m. at both Belmont Shore and Woodland Hills locations.
