Make Metro Part of Your Weekend

Simon Leigh Exhibition Celebration at LACMA -> On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art marks the opening of a new exhibition featuring the works of Simon Leigh (co-presented by California African American Museum) with a day of art, music, and movement. There will be beats from DJ Ms. Jck and DJ Peezie, a somatic movement workshop led by Dr. Shamell Bell and hands-on art-making throughout the day. All-ages welcome. Free to attend with RSVP. Summer Picnic & Ukulele RendezvousFA > On Sunday, the Lanterman House in La Canada Flintridge hosts a free afternoon of music, picnicking and games on the beautiful grounds of historic home. The house will be open for mini-tours and there will be dancing in the ballroom, plus guests are invited to bring a picnic as they enjoy live tunes from pianist Randy Stoltz and ukulele player Conrad Cayman. Pico de Mayo Street Fair – > This Sunday, the non-profit Pico Union Project celebrates 10 years of community outreach and events with a special street fair and fundraiser. The ticketed affair ($250 a person) features live music, entertainment, and complimentary bites from over a dozen Los Angeles restaurants, including Guelaguetza, Jitlada, Bé Ù, La Tecleña, La Pupusa, and Panaderia Cuscatleca, plus fresh pizza slices from the nonprofit’s new brick oven pizza. Smorgasburg BBQ Invitational Memorial Weekend Carnival -> Catch some finger-licking good fun at Santa Park with the Smorgasburg BBQ Invitational and Memorial Day Weekend Carnival, popping up from Saturday to Monday. Smorg has currated seven local BBQ joints to participate, including Domestic BBQ, , Island Smoke & Grill, Mecha BBQ, Nia & Jags, Saulitos, Zef BBQ, and Beatdown BBQ. Ticket packages start at $30 and include admission, BBQ scrip, parking, a horse racing program and tip sheet. Gates Open at 11 a.m. The BBQ runs from noon to 7 p.m. More info here.

  • This weekend the Aquarium of the Pacific opens FROGS: Facing a Changing World, a new exhibit to that spotlights the colorful, strange, and rapidly changing world of frogs.
  • Memorial Day weekend in Hermosa Beach means one thing: Fiesta Hermosa! This weekend’s three-day festival (Saturday to Monday) features a marketplace with over 240 vendors, multiple stages of live music, a wine garden, food fair and a carnival. FA
  • Topanga Days returns over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27) for three days of games, food and live music, capped by a Memorial Day parade. Adult single day tickets for non-members start at $50 per person.
