“Miradero” literally translates from Spanish as lookout, or vantage point. It’s also the name of the historic estate at the foot of the Verdugo Mountains where Glendale founder Lesile Coombs Brand called his home. At Brand’s request, Miradero was deeded to the public after he and his wife’s passing. In 1945 the city took ownership, renovated the main structure, and in 1956 Brand Library and Art Center officially opened to the public.
Today, the Brand Library & Art Center includes outdoor recreation facilities, a small Japanese Garden and tea house, The Doctor’s House (a restored Queen Anne-Eastlake style home and museum that you can tour on Sundays), a gazebo, and a hiking loop. A new wing was annexed to the original home that includes an art gallery that features rotating exhibitions and is free and open to the public during normal library hours. The Art Center also hosts an array of free visual and performing arts programming, including annual music series, dance recitals and lectures. Basically, there’s a bunch of free ways to enjoy Brand Library, making it a true gem of Glendale that’ll want to check in with again and again.
