July in Los Angeles is always hot, but it is not exactly a hotbed of museum freebies. After all, with school out for the summer and travel picking up, most institutions are counting on bigger-than-average crowds and therefore don’t feel the need to market extra off-days to potential guests. I totally get it.

That said, one thing to keep in mind is the the newly released KCRW Summer Nights schedule. The station’s slate of summer dance concerts includes stops at The Hammer Museum (July 7, 14, 21, 28) and California African American Museum (July 22) this month, so if you want to add a little boogie to your gallery exploration, consider saving those dates.

And since we’re on the subject of free concerts, I’d also remind you that Skirball’s Sunset Concert series is back starting July 21 and The Getty’s free Off the 405 series has two events this month: Los Retros on July 9 and Hand Habits on July 23. Any or all of these would make a fine date night, so maybe you’ll want to make plans with a someone special. Just an idea.

Finally, like I say every time, there are at least two dozen museums in and around Los Angeles that offer ongoing free admission (The Getty, The Getty Villa, Hammer Museum, etc…). I’ve compiled a handy list of those free museums if you’d like to explore more freebie options for July. Now, on to this month’s list…
