There’s a New Ancient Forest Opening at Descanso Gardens in September

Cue the Jurassic Park theme.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, Descanso Gardens will open their brand new Ancient Forest featuring plants virtually unchanged since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Highlighting the Ancient Forest is a new cycad collection that includes almost 175 plants representing 66 species including several endangered species.

Best part?

The public opening of the new preserve includes a daylong celebration featuring guided walks of the forest, a fossil table from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, plus tons of prehistoric inspired children’s activities.

All Ancient Forest activities are FREE with your paid admission to the gardens and will include the following schedule:

  • Ancient Plant Walk, 10:30am. & 1:00pm: Take a guided tour of the new Ancient Plants Garden and learn more about these fascinating plants.
  • Fossil Table, 10:00am. to 2:00pm. An educator from the Natural History Museum will oversee this display of fossils. Learn more about the world of the dinosaurs and maybe even touch a fossil from the Jurassic era!
  • Make a Fossil, 10:00am. to 2:00pm: Make a plant fossil in this hands-on activity for all ages.

Admission to Descanso Gardens is $9 for adults; $6 for seniors and students with a school I.D.; $4 for children 5 to 12, and free for age 4 and younger.

The Gardens are is open daily (closed Christmas) from 9:00am to 5:00pm  with extended summer hours from 5:00pm to 8:00pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 18 to Aug. 20.
