The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles boasts two DTLA locations. MOCA Grand hosts the museum’s main galleries, flagship store, and staff offices. It also offers free general admission year-round. The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA resides in a former police car warehouse in Little Tokyo, and is the bigger of the two MOCA spaces. The 55,000 square foot space lends itself to larger scale installations and conceptual sculptures, such as the current exhibition featuring the work of Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. Unlike its counterpart on Grand Ave., the Geffen requires paid entry, starting at $18 for adults. That is, unless you reserve a ticket for Free First Fridays.
First Fridays offers a monthly activation of rotating programming at the Geffen includes free admission to the galleries, provided you reserve a spot in advance. The free admission block runs from 5 to 8 p.m., and is accompanied by activations that vary from month to month. For example, this May the museum is hosting the “Mercado MOCA” which includes dozens of vendors on the museum plaza soundtracked by a lineup of DJ sets. Even if you can’t make it for May, keep it on your radar, and check back to see what’s in store.
