Art, astronomy, dance, music, theater and… pirates? It’s all on the table this weekend in Los Angeles.
From July 29-31, check out a new exhibition at Japan House LA, Gallery Weekend Los Angeles, the Night Sky Festival at Paramount Ranch, the Pirate Invasion in Long Beach, Little Literary Fair at Hauser & Wirth, Family Day at Wende Museum, the Midsummer Scream convention, the Century City Art Walk, Grand Performances, and more. Things To Do
LIFE CYCLES at Japan House LA -> Starting July 28, you can visit Japan House LA to see Tanabe Chikuunsai IV’s LIFE CYCLES exhibition, which includes a large-scale installation built from 10,000 woven bamboo strips held together by tension. The exhibition runs through January 15, 2023. Japan House is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. More info here.
Dance DTLA -> The Music Center’s Dance DTLA series continues with a night of Argentine Tango hosted by Instructor Ilona Glinarsky with music by El Pibe Rodolfini. Starts at 7 p.m. No reservation required. More info here.
Gallery Weekend Los Angeles -> Gallery Association Los Angeles presents the 2nd annual Gallery Weekend Los Angeles, running from from Wednesday to Saturday. Nearly 100 galleries and museums are participating this year with special events planned at Jeffrey Deitch, Armory Center for the Arts, Regen Project, Getty Center and the Fowler Museum.
Kalli Arte: Sueños Real -> Kalli Arte, an arts collective formed by Boyle Heights-born duo Adriana Carranza and Alfonso Aceves, has a new residency exhibition at Self-Help Graphics & Art on display now through September 23. Sueños Real is rooted in the ecosystem of Boyle Heights, symbolically represented here by a central large-scale sculpture that branches out to aspects of the artists’ community, while also connecting to ancestral traditions. Visitors can RSVP to visit the exhibition on Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More info here.
Jazz at LACMA -> This Friday at 6 p.m., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosts nine-piece jazz-pop band Bruns & Baché at the Smidt Welcome Plaza as part of the ongoing Jazz at LACMA series, which continues on Friday evenings through November. Admission is free, however seating is limited and first come, first served. More info here.
The LA 6 and the Underground -> The Torrance Art Museum’s latest main gallery resident is a new photography exhibition called The LA 6 and the Underground, which focuses its lens the inner city areas of Los Angeles, including Boyle Heights, Compton and DTLA. TAM is always free to visit. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. More info here.
California Market Center Sample Sale -> On the last Friday of each month the California Market Center hosts a public sample sale with showrooms offering men, women and children fashion as well as gift and home items at below-retail prices.
Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles -> This weekend, the Levitt Pavilion summer concert series continues with Dante Elephante, Yungatita, and Byron Gonzalez on Friday, Red Bull Batalla’s freestyle rap competition on Saturday, and Wonder-Full In The Park: A Tribute To The Music Of Stevie Wonder on Sunday. Bastard Jazz -> Primus founder and bassist virtuoso Les Claypool brings his Bastard Jazz project to The Ford this Friday for a highly anticipated evening of funk and fusion. Tickets are available for as low as $42. Get more info here.
Movies on The Roof -> My Valley Pass’s Movies on the Roof series continues this Friday and Saturday Westfield Fashion Square with screenings of Space Balls and Guardians of The Galaxy. Tickets are just $5, and proceeds for the event benefit Hope Of The Valley rescue mission. More info here.
Eat See Hear -> If want to scale up your outdoor movie experience, Eat See Hear is offering a pair of screenings at LA State Historic Park this weekend, with Jurassic Park on Friday and The Goonies on Saturday. Adult tickets start at $20 per person. Get more info here.
Midsummer Scream -> If you can’t wait until October for a Halloween fix, this three-day convention puts SoCal’s haunt and horror community in focus with over 350 exhibitors, a dozen mini-haunts and attractions, panels, presentations, live performances, and more, all at the Long Beach Convention Center. Shakespeare in the Park -> This Wednesday to Sunday, ISC’s Shakespeare in the Park continues with performances of Francis Beaumont’s Knight of the Burning Pestle. Shows begin at 7 p.m. Free to attend, but advanced reservations are required. More info here.
Century City Art Walk -> This Saturday the Century City Chamber of Commcer Arts Council in partnership with Art Muse Academy hosts an art walk through Century City that starts with the Westfield Mall and then up Avenue of the Stars. Open to the public. The event runs from 3 to 5 p.m. and registration for the tour can be made here.
Grand Performances -> This Saturday’s edition of Grand Performances is a team-up with KCRW featuring the Grammy-award winning Sly5thAve. Event starts at 6 p.m. Free to attend, no RSVP required. Grand Performances continues weekly on Saturdays through September 24. Get more info here.
Creative Communal -> On Saturday, shop from a curated marketplace when Creative Communal hits ROW DTLA for a fun afternoon event. The open air market will highlight local artisans in a family friendly environment with activities for children to enjoy. Runs noon to 5 p.m. More info here.

Night Sky Festival -> The Santa Monica Mountains National Park Service hosts the Park After Dark: Night Sky Festival this Saturday at Paramount Ranch. The event includes telescopic viewing of the stars and kid-friendly activities. Runs from 7 to 10 p.m. More info here.
Getty 25 -> This summer, The Getty has marked its 25th anniversary via a series of free pop-up community festivals held throughout Los Angeles County. Each event highlights curated experiences reflective of the host community, including interactive workshops, live music and performances, an artisan marketplace, food trucks, giveaways, photo booths, and more. Pirate Invasion -> Pirate Invasion returns to Long Beach this Saturday and Sunday for two days of swashbuckling fun at Harry Bridges Memorial Park. Expect plenty of pirate-themed entertainment including sword fights, a fire show, live rock bands, sea shanties, mermaids as well as vendors selling pirate booty from the seven seas. Kid-friendly activities include face painting, inflatables, games, and pirate goodies. Single day passes start at $10 for ages 13+, and $5 for ages 6-12. More info here.
LITLIT in the Arts District -> LITLIT, the Little Literary Fair comes to Hauser & Wirth this Saturday and Sunday for the second annual celebration of independent publishing through a series of panels, workshops and special activities. Free to attend. Get more info here.
Skirball Family Amphitheater Performances -> A new kid-friendly series at Skirball spotlights a dazzling lineup of artists who use music, dance, and storytelling to keep their cultural traditions and family histories alive, encouraging audiences to sing, dance, and interact with performers. Included with general admission tickets. This Sunday’s event is the last in the series and features Dancing Storytellers performing an interactive exploration of Indian mythology. More info here.
Family Day at Wende Museum -> This Sunday’s Family Day at The Wende Museum includes special lunar-themed activities to mark the addition of an Apollo 15 moon rock sample to the museum’s collection. Concerts in the Park -> This Sunday, the Manhattan Beach Concerts in the Park series continues for with a performance by Dietz Brothers Band. The event starts at 5 p.m. in Polliwog Park, and the series continues every Sunday through Sep. 4. More info here.

Ramen Nagi -> This week, Ramen Nagi opened its fourth U.S. location inside the Westfield Santa Anita in Arcadia. Founded by Master Ramen Chef Ikuta Satoshi, Ramen Nagi serves new wave style ramen crafted in house with five inventive broths offered and an ever changing “Limited King” special that pushes the boundaries of ramen. For opening week (July 26-August 2) Ramen Nagi will offer the W-Spicy Miso King as part of its “Limited King.” The limited edition ramen inspired by “doubles” is made with Nagi’s tonkotsu broth infused with rich miso, red pepper as well as Sichuan pepper, a special chashu prepared in two stages and thick noodles coupled with thin wide noodles.
Chunky Paper Saturday Tea Time -> bbycakes Bakeshop is the latest Saturday Tea Time partner at Chunky Paper in Chinatown. The special tea and pastry set serves two people per reservation for $55 and includes a Lemon Miso Poppyseed Cake, Scallion & Garlic Confit Swirl Rolls and an oversized Sesame Strawberry & Basil Galette. Available only for dine-in, guests will choose a tea to pair with their baked goods. Just like the treats, teas are just as creative and include Creamsicle Jasmine Oolong Tea, Strawberry Green Tea, Peach Rooibos and Butter Cookie Black Tea.
Upstairs at Ace Hotel x Soft Spirits -> Los Angeles non-alcoholic spirits, wine and beer shop Soft Spirits sets up a pop-up bar at the Ace Hotel’s Poolside Lounge Upstairs this Saturday, July 30. Soft Spirits will offer specialty cocktails, wine and beers paired with curated bites from Upstairs while guests bask in the sun poolside while listening to DJ’d tunes.
