June 11, 2015 by Brian Champlin

Wait, so competitive air guitar is a thing? Like, that people do? In Public?

Yep.

Turns out there’s even a national competition for such endeavors. It’s called the U.S. Air Guitar Championships and on June 13 at the Viper Room a qualifying event will take place to determine who will represent Los Angeles in the next round of competitions.

Classic tunes, unbridled enthusiasm and many (MANY) questionable costumes will abound. A quick rundown of competitors reads like a list of made-up cartoon super heroes: Air-O-Dynamic, Axe Redeemer, Ziggy Stardust, Andres Segoviair, Roqzilla, and (my personal favorite) Optimus Shred.

Watch YouTube clip below to get a bit more of the flavor:

1st and 2nd place finishers will receive two tickets to the Western Conference Finals in San Francisco plus cash prizes and a trophy (featuring an iron eagle).

Event starts at 9:00pm. Tickets are $10.

The Viper Room, located at  8852 West Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Oh, and if you want to register to compete you can do so via Eventbrite (must be 18+ to register).
