As a film school survivor graduate myself, I always like to find ways to support the local scene and bring awareness to folks putting their neck out there trying to create somethimg.

This weekend provides one such opportunity, with the 5th Annual No Budget Film Festival taking place from Nov 21st – 23rd at a couple different locations throughout Los Angeles.

What is a No Budget Film Festival, you ask? Well, the mission is to encourage filmmakers to overcome monetary obstacles and simply create. In order words, DIY filmmaking at it’s finest!

It opens on Friday with an opening night reception at the Vortex Immersion Dome and ends with a $20 open bar gala and awards ceremony at Mack Sennet Studios, which is where all of the screenings will take place over the weekend.

In between there will be a Filmmaking Hacks workshop with two of the biggest names in YouTube – 5 Second Films and RocketJump (aka the minds behind Video Game High School), a Producers workshop with the producers of Life Partners, Dear White People, and Short Term 12, an “indie film” version of Upright Citizen Brigade improv show favorite, “Shitty Jobs”, and that’s just for starters. And that’s besides the dozens of other great films that will be screened.

In addition to the films and workshops, the festival organizers have commissioned visual artists to create original work based on select films (could be kinda cool!).

Tickets for individual events start at $10, with daily passes running at $35 and full weekend passes going for $85.

For a full schedule and event listing you can head over to the ticketing page on Eventbrite.

Oh, and be sure to check out this mashup of footage from some of this year’s entrants below.
