March 25, 2016 by Brian Champlin

If the idea of getting cozy with a snuggly pup while drinking a tasty caffeinated brew sounds like the perfect way to spend your afternoon, then this one’s for you…

The Dog Cafe, situated in the south Silver Lake neighborhood of Rampart Village, will be having their grand opening celebration on April 7, 2016.

So what’s a Dog Cafe? Well, the premise is pretty simple: Provide a space where adoptable pups from local shelters can meet humans in a non-shelter environment, get to know each other, and maybe even form a connection strong enough to lead to adoption.

The cafe, which takes a cue from similar themed cafes currently operating in Asian, is really divided into two parts. One is the dog lounge, where the actual dog-human interactions take place, and the other half is an adjacent space next door that serves up specialty coffee and tea drinks.

Sarah Wolfgang, the founder of The Dog Cafe, explained the motivation behind the space via a press release announcing the grand opening date, “We consider The Dog Cafe a halfway house for dogs; these pups may have been in bad situations where they were abused or neglected, then started to give up hope while sitting in shelter kennels, but we’re aiming to send each dog on the path to a new life in a forever home. When visitors see our dogs here with us, they see them in their true light – and some people will even find that they’re looking at future members of their families.”

Admission is to The Dog Cafe is $10 per person for each 55-minute block of time reserved.  The admission fee includes a complimentary coffee, tea or lemonade (or discount off of a specialty beverage).

While walk-ups will be accepted, reservations are highly recommended as space is limited.

Note that for the time being the dog lounge portion of the cafe has been holding a soft-opening where no reservations are accepted, but walk-ups are welcome (so far the Yelp reviews have been stellar)

The April 7 grand opening will be the official unveiling of the adjoining coffee shop, as well as a retail space that includes merchandise for purchase from The Dog Company.

Following the grand opening normal operating hours will begin, along with timed reservations.

The Dog Cafe hours will be TuesdaySunday, 11:00am-7:00pm. It is located at 240 N. Virgil Ave (Unit 12), Los Angeles, CA 90004.
