43 Awesome Things To Do In L.A. This Weekend [ 7-31-15 to 8-2-15]

Los Angeles provides no limit of things to do, some awesome and some not so awesome. Since time is precious in this fast paced city, we decided to curate a list of things to do in Los Angeles every weekend that’ll help you decide how you want to spend your limited supply of attention (not to mention dollars!).

This weekend includes a FREE De La Soul / Quantic concert, a bacon festival, a guerrilla art installation, Spamalot at the Hollywood Bowl, NEXT FEST, a baseball freeway series, and the conclusion of the Special Olympics World Games (and that’s just for starters!).

So grab some friends or go at it alone, but most importantly have fun and enjoy yourself!

1. A Rainbow Yarn Bridge in Santa Monica

This past Monday night artist Hot Tea (and a few of his friends) created Migration, a guerrilla art installation made of yarn on top of a pedestrian bridge above PCH in Santa Monica (pictured above). The city is sure to take it down soon, so check it out while it lasts!

2. Monty Python’s Spamalot At The Hollywood Bowl

Monty Python’s Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail. The show features lusty maidens, dancing divas, a killer rabbit and a legless knight. This weekend watch a cast of acting veterans that include Kevin Chamberlin, Tom Deckman and Rick Holmes perform alongside Comedian Craig Robinson as King Arthur and movie star Christian Slater as Sir Galahad for three nights at the iconic Hollywood Bowl. Spamalot will be conducted by Todd Ellison with choreography adapted and re-staged by Scott Taylor and Billy Sprague Jr., from the original by Casey Nicholaw. 3. Legally Blonde: The Musical

This weekend come to the Morgan-Dixon Theater for a production of the Tony Award winning musical based on the novel by Amanda Brown (and perhaps more famously, the movie starring Reese Witherspoon). You can even grab half-off tickets via our friends at Goldstar for around $12.50.

4. Friday Night Rock Doc’s At The Skirball

Hangout at the Skirball Cultural Center and watch The Last Waltz, directed by Martin Scorsese hailed as “the best rock movie ever made” by Rolling Stone. The 1976 rock doc features memorable performances by some of the most iconic musicians ever like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell. The night will start with KCSN’s DJ Les Perry spining tunes from the ’60s and ’70s, folks can explore Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution exhibit and the movie starts at 8:00pm. Freebie alert! 6. Barnsdall Park’s Friday Night Wine Tasting

All summer long Barnsdall Art Park has a weekly fundraiser to benefit Barnsdall Art Park Foundation programs and projects. Perched on a hill with a gorgeous panoramic view of Hollywood, guests will enjoy fine wine and art in the gardens of Frank Lloyd Wright’s newly restored architectural gem, Hollyhock House. Silver Lake Wine will curate fine selections of boutique, small production, artisanal wines for park-goers as well as local gourmet cheese shop, Say Cheese.

7. Special Olympics World Games: Final Events and Closing Festivities

The Special Olympics World Games wraps up this weekend, but there are still plenty of inspiring moments left to be watched at all the scheduled events around the city. All competitions are free and open to the viewing public. Here is the complete schedule for reference.

The Plaza Level at FIGat7th in DTLA invites the public for a free night of music with Anderson Paak, The Free Nationals and Andre Power. Explore the bars and restaurants at Fig during the Taste happy hour starting at 4:00pm! Doors open at 7:00pm for the Plaza Bar and the show starts at 8:00pm.

11. Asics Warehouse Sale

Score 50% to 75% off Asics shoes, apparel, and workout accessories for women, men, and kids. Happening throughout the weekend, Friday (10:00am to 7:00pm), Saturday (8:00am to 6:00pm), and Sunday (9:00am to 5:00pm) No bags are allowed and wearing Asics into the event is prohibited. 12. Dance Downtown

The weekly summer dance party at the Music Center in DTLA. This week’s dance theme and class will be Cumbia! The shows and dance parties are 100% free to the public all summer long.

14. Summertime Cinema Returns To Westfield Culver City and Westfield Fashion Square

Every Friday, starting July 10th through August 7th, beloved movies will be screened outdoors at both centers allowing attendees to relive the magic of the big screen. The movies are free to the public and viewers will enjoy various special goodies at the event.

15. Grand Performances

Grand Performances has a summer-long concert series that brings Angelenos together with an eclectic mix of musical performances at a unique setting in Downtown L.A.

16. Rachel Pally Warehouse Sale

One of the biggest Rachel Pally Warehouse Sales of the season will take place this weekend. 18. U.S. Open of Surfing

It’s that time of year again where all the best surfing athletes go down to Surf City USA to compete in a weeklong battle of gnarly waves. Nearing the end of the event on August 2nd this annual summer competition takes over Huntington Beach and is the largest surfing competition in the world.

21. Moshi Moshi Nippon: A Japanese Culture Festival

This Saturday and Sunday at The Reef in Downtown Los Angeles, come check out the L.A. debut of Moshi Moshi Noppon, a Japanese culture festival featuring an array of Harajuku models, shops from Japan, photo booths, Cosplay, Asobi System DJ’s, and of course, karaoke. 22. Big Bite Bacon Fest

Spend three hours in bacon and pork nirvana with dozens of local restaurants, chefs and vendors providing bacon themed bites. Pork inspired entertainment from bands to lawn games including access aboard the majestic Queen Mary for a self-guided tour is all included with a beer tasting wrist band as an add-on.

23. SPLASH

SPLASH is a curated event experience that is focused on supporting the local community in the arts, music and food industry. Aimed to create an environment where like minded people come together to connect, collaborate and be inspired by their local artisans SPLASH will take place at The Springs this Saturday afternoon.

24. Sounds In Focus With De La Soul + Quantic

KCRW’s signature FREE summer series takes over the Annenberg Space For Photography with performances by De La Soul and Quantic. You must RSVP but that doesn’t hold your spot so arrive early. Doors open at 5:00pm with KCRW DJ’s spinning tunes.

25. Eat|See|Hear Screening Wet Hot American Summer

EatISeeIHear will host an exclusive outdoor screening of “Wet Hot American Summer” and the new Netflix series “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” at The Autry this Saturday. The film and show’s creator, David Wain, will be in attendance to introduce the series, as well as surprise original cast members. Attendees will have the chance to see some of their favorite comedy stars on stage after the feature presentation. Netflix will also be there with the “WHAS: First Day of Camp” school bus, offering giveaways, games, swag and more fun.

26. Nerdist Presents: The 6th Annual #SUMMAHFEST

Nerdist Industries, NerdMelt Showroom, and Nerdist School present the 6th annual SUMMAHFEST with the King of Summah, Howard Kremer, for a full day of comedy, music, waterslides, food trucks, free beer, water balloon fights, face-painting, summah costumes and more summah fun! 27. Leimert Park Village Book Fair

The 9th annual Leimert Park Village Book Fair will be held at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw for the second year running. The event will feature panels, exhibitions, book readings and signings, musical performances and other activities for the whole family. Featured this year is a panel of writers from Fox’s hit television show Empire discussing the action behind the scenes. Other highlights include “Writers and Their Typewriters,” an exhibition showcasing Ernest Hemingway’s personal typewriter from Steve Soboroff’s celebrated collection, as well as a display of classic cars curated by the Petersen Automotive Museum, a vinyl album display curated by Amoeba Music, and a collection of 80s vintage toys.

28. The Way We Wore Mega Sale

Starting Saturday, the first floor (excluding select items) at The Way We Wore will be 50% off during the vintage store’s semi-annual sale.

29. Old Town Pasadena Film Festival 

The Old Pasadena Film Festival brings back its annual summer series for the rest of this month of (mostly) outdoor movie screenings. Best part? All events are FREE and open to the public.

30. BCBG Sale

From 8:00am to 1:00pm, BCBG items are slashed up to 90% off on contemporary tops, casual dresses, bottoms, knits, accessories, evening gowns, and more. Items will be priced from $5 to $90. There are no try-ons allowed at the sale or children under 12.

31. Disco Dining Club

Disco Dining Club is a bi-monthly culinary excursion steeped in all the excess, debauchery and hedonism of disco. This time Chef Isaiah Frizell, owner of pHest will plan the elaborate menu. Guest will also enjoy an open bar, unlimited oysters by Shucks Oysters and music by Heidi Lawden, Lionel Rifkin and Ray Barragan, with a background of opera singers too! 32. David Hockney At LA Louver

David Hockney’s work is being shown jointly by L.A. Louver and London’s Annely Juda Fine Art together they present “David Hockney: Painting and Photography,” an exhibition of brand-new works all made in the last two years by the prolific artist.

33. Street Food Cinema X2: Dirty Dancing & Office Space

Good movies, amazing venues, up and coming local bands and tasty food trucks. What more could you ask for? This weekend Street Food Cinema screens Dirty Dancing at Victory Park in Pasadena. AND an additional screening of Office Space at Westchester Park! Both movies starts at 8:30pm. And of course be sure to check Goldstar to see if any discount tickets are still available. 

34. Downtown Burbank Car Classic

Attention car enthusiasts! Hundreds of classic cars are making their way to Downtown Burbank this Saturday. Check it all out for free. The event runs from 3:00pm to 9:00pm and takes over six blocks.

35. Raiders of the Lost Ark at the Drive-In

The Electric Dusk Drive-in will be screening Raiders of the Lost Ark. Drive-in spots vary in price and lawn seating is also an option.

36. INVASION Photo Series Premiere 

Photographer and visual artist Patrick McPheron is unleashing “INVASION”, an immersive
sci- event to celebrate the worldwide release of his new book. Expect characters from the series brought to life, drinks sponsored by REDLINE and a soundtrack that will send chills down your spine. This special event marks the world premiere of 20 pieces from McPheron’s series, shown for the first time together and also serves as the social book release party.

37. FIDM Museum Hosting Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition

The 9th Annual Exhibition: The Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design will display about 100 costumes created by costume designers, supervisors, and this year’s Emmy Nominees® at the FIDM Museum in DTLA. Costumes include Gotham, Peter Pan Live! Wolf Hall and more. In addition you might want to view Helen Larson’s historic fashion collection with beautiful dresses and hats dating back to 1760! Both exhibits are free to the public and available Tuesday through Saturday 10:00am to 5:00pm.

38. Hey There Muscles FREE Work Out Session Kicks Off On The Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier’s hit summer wellness program, Hey There Muscles, is back for a second year of free weekend workouts. Led by the original Hulk himself, Lou Ferrigno, his daughter Shanna and their rotating team of fitness gurus, the program will continue for four Saturdays at 9:00a.m. on the West end of the Pier. Classes offer a total body workout with motivational pep talks from some of LA’s best fitness and nutrition instructors.

39. Gamble House Brings Back its Popular ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ Tour

For a limited time this summer the Gamble House will once again open its servants’ quarters for exclusive 90-minute “Upstairs Downstairs” tours. Visitors to the Gamble House from July 30 through August 16 will be able to compare the living quarters of the served with those “in service.” New information recently emerged about the Gamble family and their servants allowing the curators to share more of the personal history of those who lived and worked at 4 Westmoreland Place in Pasadena. Learn just how the Gambles lived in, maintained and appreciated their beautiful Greene & Greene house.

40. Sundance NEXT FEST Kicks Off at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery 

Got a craving to go see some fresh indie films straight from Sundance? Well now is your chance. NEXT FEST is a weekend-long celebration of film and music (August 7-9) that will feature the Los Angeles premiere of six select films showcased at the Sundance Film Festival Each film screening is accompanied by a specially paired musical performance or a filmmaker conversation. Things kick off one week early with a screening of Cop Car on Sunday, August 2 at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery presented by Cinespia.

41. The 13th Annual Los Angeles Improv Comedy Festival

This week long event of comedy mixes established and newbies together for some LOL’s. The festival kicks off on Sunday and runs till the 9th of this month.

42. SuperHero — Princess Academy: A Mini-Musical for Little Ones

Need to entertain the little guys and gals this weekend? Check out this one-hour mini-musical performed by the folks at the Creating Arts Company.
