Some good news. The USNS Mercy, which left San Diego on Monday, has now arrived at the Port of Los Angeles. With 1,000 beds, this ship is now the biggest hospital in Los Angeles.

The Navy ship isn’t here to treat coronavirus patients, but rather those who do NOT have COVID-19. Mayor Eric Garcetti has called the ship a “COVID-19-free bubble.” By offering care to those patients, hospitals on land will have more free beds for other patients, including those who are diagnosed with COVID-19.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and Garcetti held a briefing in front of the USNS Mercy earlier today. Garcetti said that “at full capacity, [the USNS Mercy] will add two-thirds more beds to the fight here in Los Angeles.”
