There are a lot of ways to spend a summer in Los Angeles. A lot of expensive, costly, bank-account-draining ideas to entertain oneself in this vast cultural stew of possibility. Alternatively, you could take advantage of the info in this post.

Below I’ve compiled a massive chronological listing of all the free things to do in L.A. on our radar as summer kicks into gear. Activities range from outdoor movies (plenty of those), live music (even more of these), free Shakespeare, free museum days, art walks, festivals, and dance parties. We start the list on the eve of summer solstice (the solstice is tomorrow, June 21) and wrap it at the end of September.

Obviously, it’s not humanly possible to catch every major free event going on in Los Angeles, but with 200+ summer ideas so far, it’s a pretty good place to start. Also, I consider this post a living document, meaning I’ll add to it as summer goes along and I either a) get word about event series I didn’t know about or b) official info becomes available about events scheduled for later in the season. If you want to send updates, corrections, or suggestions, there’s info at the bottom of this post on how to do that.

As a bonus, after the chronological rundown ends I’ve added a bulleted list of some ‘evergreen freebies’ you could check out. These are kind of bucket list items for people living in or visiting L.A. You may have done some of these already, but maybe you haven’t, in which case now might be the perfect time.

In any case, hope you find the list useful. Here’s wishing you an an awesome summer!
